Nicolette Vander Velde

For over four years, Ms. Vander Velde has taught in a 1:1 linux-based netbook classroom which she has effectively used to support writing instruction, science inquiry and reading skills development. East Elementary School was identified as one of 22 "Center of Excellence" schools in Colorado for extraordinary student achievement growth on state assessments. Serving a population with high poverty and many different languages, Ms. Vander Velde and her colleagues at East Elementary have fused excellent instructional strategies with 21st Century learning to unleash the potential of every student. Nicolette Vander Velde is an Elementary Certified Teacher and holds a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis on English as a second language from the University of Northern Colorado, followed by a master's degree in curriculum and instruction and an administrative degree from the University of Phoenix. She has been teaching for eight years. At the district level, Ms. Vander Velde has presented at the Littleton Public School new teacher orientation, focusing on technology implementation and the writer's workshop. She has co-presented at the Technology in Education Conference at Copper Mountain and at the International Society for Technology in Education at the Denver Convention Center.
